Part of the CustodyStress archive of observed Bitcoin custody incidents
Halving Cycle 4 (2021–2024)
The fourth halving cycle is defined by the emergence of coercion as a primary stress category. As Bitcoin's price reached new highs and self-custody became more widely practised, targeted physical attacks increased sharply. The FTX collapse in 2022 produced the largest single cluster of vendor-lockout cases in the archive.
191 cases from this period are included in this archive. Coercion accounts for 30% of cases — the dominant stress pattern. 73% of determinate cases resulted in a blocked outcome.
