SurvivesCase description
A Bitcoin holder discovered in October 2023 that a metal seed storage plate they had purchased and stamped in 2021 had a transcription error: one word had been stamped as a valid BIP39 word but not the correct word for that position in their seed. The error was discovered only when attempting to restore to a new device after the original device failed. Recovery required a systematic search through the 2,048-word BIP39 list for each of the 24 positions—a feasible but time-consuming process. The correct seed was found after testing approximately 1,700 word substitutions.
