A 2024 guide published by KeychainX wallet recovery services updated practitioners on the landscape of forgotten wallet passwords. The guide noted that the most common recovery scenario involved early Bitcoin Core wallet holders who had set passwords in the 2013–2017 period using patterns they no longer recognised. The second most common was Trezor hardware wallets with a 25th-word passphrase set at setup that was never recorded. KeychainX reported that as Bitcoin's price recovered toward all-time highs in 2024, the volume of recovery requests increased substantially as holders with dormant wallets attempted to regain access for the first time in years.
