Estate access failure — hardware wallet (2025)
BlockedCase description
A 2025 Australian estate case involved a holder who had migrated between several wallet applications over the years—from a desktop wallet in 2014, to a mobile wallet in 2018, to a hardware wallet in 2021. The estate contained all three devices. The on-chain history showed that the most recent hardware wallet had received all funds. The executor attempted to use PINs and seed phrases found in the holder's documents but none worked for the hardware wallet. Investigation revealed the holder had used different seed phrases for each wallet generation and had documented only the 2014 and 2018 seed phrases—not the 2021 hardware wallet's seed phrase. The hardware wallet was the only relevant device, and its seed phrase remained undiscovered.
