Documentation absent — hardware wallet (2024)
BlockedCase description
A 2024 report by an estate planning firm noted a dramatic increase in inquiries from families of deceased Bitcoin holders as Bitcoin's price exceeded $100,000. Many of these families knew their deceased relative had held Bitcoin—they had been mentioned in conversation or seen in tax records—but had no knowledge of where the keys were stored. The most common failure pattern observed was Bitcoin holders who had purchased on exchanges and subsequently withdrawn to self-custody without ever documenting the self-custody arrangements. The exchange showed no balance (withdrawn), and no wallet was discoverable. The Bitcoin was on-chain and immovable.
