Tax returns confirmed significant Bitcoin holdings, but no seed phrase could be found.

Case description
An estate executor in New York in 2023 located a Ledger Nano S in a desk drawer of a deceased holder. Tax returns confirmed significant Bitcoin holdings, but no seed phrase could be found. The will contained no digital asset instructions. Despite RUFADAA giving the executor legal authority to request digital asset access from custodians, the law provided no mechanism to access a self-custody hardware wallet without the seed phrase. The executor held a device worth potentially millions that was technically inaccessible. A recovery firm confirmed it could not be bypassed without the seed.
