Documentation absent — exchange 2023
ConstrainedCase description
Mt. Gox creditors who had not retained documentation of their 2014 holdings encountered a claims verification problem in 2023 as the trustee prepared for distributions. The trustee's system required creditors to verify their claim amounts against the exchange's own records. Creditors whose account balances differed from the trustee's records—due to disputed trades, withdrawal records, or historical exchange rate calculations—needed to produce their own historical documentation to contest the discrepancy. After nine years, many could not locate old emails, bank records, or screenshots from the 2013–2014 period.

What this illustrates
Nobody left instructions. Whoever needed to recover the funds had no starting point. Whether full access was ultimately possible is unclear, but significant delay or outside intervention was involved.
Outcome interpretation
Access remained possible, but only with delay, dependence, or significant difficulty.
