Hidden wallet discovered — hardware wallet (2023)
ConstrainedCase description
A 2023 estate case widely referenced in digital asset legal commentary involved a software engineer who had accumulated Bitcoin since 2014 and maintained a sophisticated self-custody setup—multiple hardware wallets, encrypted seed phrase backups, and a passphrase. After his unexpected death, his family found the devices and a backup document but could not determine which passphrase corresponded to which wallet. After engaging two separate recovery services over four months, one of three wallets was successfully accessed.

What this illustrates
There was only one way in. When that path was gone, so was access. Whether full access was ultimately possible is unclear, but significant delay or outside intervention was involved.
Outcome interpretation
Access remained possible, but only with delay, dependence, or significant difficulty.
