In December 2023, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to federal money laundering charges as part of a $4.3 billion settlement between Binance and US authorities. The settlement included enhanced compliance monitoring and restrictions on Binance's US operations. Some US users found their accounts subject to enhanced verification requirements as part of Binance's compliance overhaul. Users with incomplete KYC documentation who had previously traded freely found themselves temporarily unable to withdraw pending verification completion.
