Physical coercion — hardware wallet (2025)
ConstrainedCase description
A Ugandan Bitcoin holder was kidnapped near Kampala in May 2025 by five armed individuals, some dressed in military-style uniforms, who surrounded his car and abducted him. The victim was blindfolded and held captive while the attackers demanded Bitcoin transfers. The incident was reported to NBC News and was consistent with a pattern of cryptocurrency kidnappings spreading from Western Europe and North America to East Africa in 2025, as Bitcoin adoption expanded in developing economies. The attackers demonstrated knowledge of cryptocurrency transactions, specifically requesting payment in privacy coins rather than Bitcoin to avoid blockchain tracing.
