In late 2024, French police investigated a series of physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders and their family members in Paris and surrounding regions. One case involved an attacker who entered the father of a crypto entrepreneur, held him for an extended period, and demanded cryptocurrency as ransom. The father was rescued in a police raid. French authorities noted a rise in attacks on cryptocurrency holders' relatives—a tactic that allowed attackers to coerce targets without confronting people who might have physical security measures in place. This targeting of family members foreshadowed the much higher-profile Ledger founder kidnapping in January 2025.
