Physical coercion — hardware wallet (2024)
BlockedCase description
In Brazil, a crypto trader's mother was kidnapped and held captive until her son paid a ransom of five Bitcoin. Four people were arrested following the payment and subsequent police investigation. Brazilian court coverage noted that organised criminal groups had developed specific tactics for targeting cryptocurrency holders through their family members, including conducting intelligence on social media to identify holders and their relatives. The Brazilian case was part of a documented pattern of crypto kidnapping in Latin America in 2024, where the irreversibility of Bitcoin transactions made it attractive as a ransom vehicle.
