Physical coercion — hardware wallet (2023)
BlockedCase description
Canadian police in 2023 documented a pattern of robbery crews targeting Bitcoin ATM users in Toronto. Victims were approached immediately after completing ATM transactions, followed to their vehicles, and threatened into transferring additional wallet funds via their phones. The attacks were enabled by the public visibility of ATM transactions: observers could see the denomination of cash inserted, infer the Bitcoin value, and follow targets who appeared to hold significant holdings. The attacks highlighted a specific vulnerability created by physical Bitcoin ATM infrastructure in high-crime areas.
